Reducing Virgin Plastic: P&G’s Commitment to Sustainability

P&G is committed to achieving sustainability goals that will reduce the use of virgin petroleum plastic in our packaging by 50% by 2030.

Two of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges are finite resources and growing consumption. As plastic waste continues to be at the center of this global issue, P&G brands are committed to being a part of the solution and to enabling responsible consumption — through product innovation and partnerships.

Our Sustainability Goals for Plastic Packaging

As a company of trusted household brands, we’ve set ambitious sustainability goals, including producing 100% recyclable or reusable packaging and reducing the use of virgin petroleum plastic in our packaging by 50% by 2030.

Here’s how we’ll do it:

  • We’ll develop lighter, more efficient versions of our packaging.
  • We’ll increase the recycled content in our packaging.
  • We’ll create more concentrated forms of our products, like Tide PODS, to reduce the size of packaging
  • We’ll use alternative materials where it makes sense.

Altogether, we estimate these practices will avoid the use of more than 300,000 tons of virgin plastic every year.

Our Progress So Far

Here’s a snapshot of how we’re reducing virgin petroleum plastic in our North America products:


  • By 2023, our Tide PODS and Gain Flings packaging will be 100% recyclable. Additionally, 99% of all fabric care packaging in North America will be recyclable by 2023.
  • Our Dawn Ultra Dish Soap clear bottles are currently made with 35% post-consumer resin (PCR), and our Mr. Clean bottles are made with 25% PCR. This environmentally friendly packaging option is made from existing plastic bottles and other plastics.
  • We’ve produced more than 1 million Head & Shoulders shampoo bottles from recycled beach plastic since 2017.

Our Ambition

Over the next 10 years, we’ll work to make our packages with a next life in mind, and continuously innovate with recycled plastic (PCR) to reduce our environmental footprint.

We’ve also joined forces with the Alliance to End Plastic Waste, an organization with more than 40 global companies working together to create a comprehensive, integrated strategy that will allow people everywhere to work to reduce plastic waste.
